Coffee gurus needed! Best espresso machine for a college kid on a budget?

I am a college student, and I work as a barista to help pay for school. I’m entertaining the idea of buying my own small espresso machine, but I don’t really know what kind to get. I’ve only ever used restaurant-grade machines before, and I don’t know what to look for in a small machine. I want it to have a wand, and I want to be able to use ground coffee (no pods).

I see stuff about steam powered vs. pump-powered machines, and shamefully, even though I work in 2 coffeeshops, I don’t know what that means. It sounds to me like pump machines are more powerful than steam-powered ones, but I don’t know if that’s correct.

Also, I need the machine to be cheap…because minimum wage really doesn’t go all that far. So far I like the look of the DeLonghi EC155, which looks like it usually goes for around . Here it is:

Anyway, I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts, since I don’t really know what I’m doing.

Thanks a lot!

Better than Starbucks Coffee?

I’ve been drinking coffee for about four years now and last year I discovered Starbucks coffee. After months of undecision, I finally coughed up 5 dollars and tried my first Starbucks drink. And with no experience what so ever, I chose the fanciest name on the menu. And like a Starbucks virgin, I said "I’ll have a large Carmel Macchiato, please." Of course the barista replied back "Oh, you mean a Venti?" With language aside, I tried the carmel macchiato, and it immediately became my favorite drink. I than saved up and purchased an espresso machine, syrups, a starter kit, espresso beans, and a lot of milk and I began making my own espresso drinks.

But after reading A LOT of information online, I’ve heard a lot of people saying Starbucks sucks, and that there is better coffee out there. I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a coffeeshop or place that would be worth trying, that might have better coffee/espresso than Starbucks?

Oh, and no starbucks bashing please…I enjoy their coffee and I only want answers and responses on where I can get a good cup of joe outside of Starbucks. Also list why you think it’s better than starbucks, and what you think about starbucks…but NO bashing. This isn’t a bashing starbucks forum. I just want good coffee. :)

As a Barista: What do you do when someone orders just ONE cafe latte, but you have a TWO nossel group handle?

You are only using one nossel.

I have applied as a barista soon and I just completed a basista training course, but I forgot to ask what I should do in this situation?

Would I just put another cup there and let it pour into that? Whats the point of that if half the espresso is then wasted on a cop that nobody ordered? Can you just let it drain into the collecting area of the machine? That also seems like a waste.

Help, I don’t want to have to ask this when I go to my job.
Half the espresso wouldn’t be wasted, you would have one espresso for the cafe latte and another espresso wasted. So what would I do?

Can you think of any more fixed costs a mobile coffee van would have?

Im doing a business assignment, and need to work out my fixed costs. The business is selling authentic coffee – similar to how they make it in Starbucks/Costa etc. So in other words i need to think of a list of what you need to make coffee. I already have:
The van itself (which comes with the fridges, generators etc)
The espresso machine
Milk jugs
Thermometer
The cups/stirrers/sleeves
Milk
Coffee
Sugar

Can you think of anything else that a barista would use to make coffee?

Thanks in advance,
Clare

Can anyone recommend a solid espresso/coffee maker?

I own a Westbend combination espresso/Coffee Maker which has been used almost daily for the last 3 years. (I know, I’m suprised too considering its hardly high end) Its worked very well but at this point the poor machine is just worn out, and I’m looking to get a new one.
I used to be a barista and I enjoy tamping my own espresso shots. My roommates like a good pot of regular coffee in the morning. Thus my ideal combination machine would have a Drip Coffee function, manual espresso function (not automatic), and a steaming nozzle. Things like automatic shut off are great too.
My problem is there doesn’t seem to be a great amount of decent combination machines out there. I’m seeing alot of Deloughi and Krups combination models and they’re all getting HORRIBLE user reviews (breaking after a few months, leaking water, etc). While I can’t spend 00 on a professional model, I’d like the model I buy to not break on me after 2-3 months. And due to lack of electrical outlets and counter space, Its not an option to buy a separate espresso machine and separate coffee maker. Please no recommendations for stovetop espresso machines; they’re adorable but I don’t have that kind of time in the mornings.
Thanks!

What is the best method to froth milk without the aid of a capuccino machine?

I have a Barista Athena machine, but for One Cup I like to use the Stove Top brewer. The only problem is frothing the milk. The microwave proved to be a messy disaster. Any input? Also tips on measuring espresso for small quantities.
Thanks

i need help using my krups espresso machine.?

my boyfriend got me the krups XP4030 espresso machine. i’ve been trying to watch on youtube about how to make a simple mocha or cappuccino using the frothy milk & espresso & froth, but i’m totally lost. i read the directions on how to make coffee in the pamphlet it came with but it doesn’t really tell me how to make the good stuff like they do at seattles best or starbucks.

on the videos i watched (i also tried looking up my model, but i couldn’t really see what they were doing or if it was my model), i saw that some people had those 2 Shot Glasses for the shots. but when i used my machine, it filled up my 8 oz cup. i know those little shot glasses were not 8 oz! also, some of the recipes were 1/3 milk, 1/3 espresso, & 1/3 froth. so how can i split all that up? but first, i would like to know how to make those shots of coffee, or if i’m supposed too.

is there a good site besides youtube that can help me? i would really like a barista to help me with this. (=

thanks for looking!!

Where does a person get barista training?

The world is being inundated with more and more specialty coffee stores and cafes serving espresso drinks. And every new espresso machine that comes into this world has at least one barista pulling the shots. Where do all those baristas learn their craft?

I’m guessing it isn’t Starbucks, because many of their machines pull automated shots. So who out there is teaching the science? Where do aspiring entry-level baristas go to learn coffee-slinging?

steaming milk with Starbucks Sirena espresso machine?

I am a barista at Starbucks, and I bought the Starbucks Sirena machine for use at home. So far it seems alright but i started steaming milk for use in a latte, and it took forever! Maybe it’s because it was the first time using it to steam, because it seemed to get quicker the longer i used it. Does anyone have this machine and how long does it take you to Steam Milk to about 160?
